Greek Life
Benefits
Fraternities are unlike other campus organizations you will join during your Potsdam experience. As a member of Psi Phi Delta, you can expect to be plugged into an organization that fosters academic achievement, philanthropic community service, leadership, athletics and responsible social skills development.
Obtaining high grades and being campus a leader, for example, have been two of the many reasons fraternities have existed on campuses throughout the United States since the first Greek-letter organization, Phi Beta Kappa, began in 1776. Brothers like to study together and offer peer pressure to do your best in school. That’s why you enrolled at Potsdam! Likewise, when running for a leadership position or election, your brothers can help support you and campaign with you.
There are many outstanding reasons for joining. If you were a member of a high school or community sports team before enrolling at Potsdam, then a fraternity intramural team offers a way to stay active in a competitive way.
Another important advantage of membership is after you graduate from Potsdam. Fraternities have career networking opportunities. That’s because membership in a fraternity is a life-long experience, creating a network with alumni living throughout the state and nation.
Take a look at fraternity membership opportunities, and you’ll find it fits well into your college experience.
Joining a fraternity
The word "rush" is a fraternity term that means new member recruitment. To rush a fraternity is the process of mutually selecting a fraternity. We encourage you to express your interest or questions that we may explain the benefits of membership in more detail and show you how Psi Phi Delta fraternity is the right choice to enhance your Potsdam experience.
How do you rush? Just ask any Psi Phi Brother, and he’ll be happy to help you get signed up with the College and let you know when you can attend the Rush events.
New member education
Gone are the days of "pledging" a fraternity and hazing. If you have seen the movie Animal House, please forget it. Times have changed and Psi Phi Delta has adopted the nationally accepted practices of New Member Education to orient its inductees into full fraternity membership.
Every fraternity chapter has a program that teaches its new members important information, like the history of the chapter, as well as requiring the fulfillment of certain requirements, like the performance of a philanthropic community service project. These activities give new members a sense of the legacy each fraternity makes as well as trains them to work in a team setting toward a common goal.
Upon the successful completion of the new member education program, the new member is inducted into full membership rights and privileges of Psi Phi Delta fraternity.
